When at college, you have a tendency to join groups or societies. They give you a sense of belongingness, their achievements become your achievements. The stay back sessions, the breaks in practices, the actual practice fun... they are a part of college fun and life, that contribute to who you are and what kind of a person you become, how you socialize and how you live your life.
My college is a strictly girls college, with tough rules and regulations, but the part that interests me most is how these girls can have fun, maintaining all rules and living upto high expectations of the society, family and teachers all at the same time. They don't just study, they'd rather live life king size, because in all your troubles, worries, tensions and stresses, its one's friends and buddies who really understand you, respect you for who you are and accept you just as you are. Though our college offers 22 societies to the "young ladies", I am going to mention only a few in here :D.
| Be a part of something |
Western Cultural Society:
Though I am not a singer for the society, it simply has to be accepted that they are the craziest, loveliest and most amazing singers ever. This society has been a great part of my life up until now. When you dance with a group, it becomes a sort of a lifestyle. Its like continuous after college camps at college doing the thing you love the most and doing it with people who love it just as much as you do. The western cultural society brings a sort of a twist in our very eastern oriented college.
| Dance it out! |
Eastern Cultural Society:
Of course, there has to be one eastern cultural society in every Indian college right? It brings the eastern flavour, and enhances our knowledge of the many cultures of our country. Diverse dancing styles to singing rabindra sangeet or reciting ghazalas.....you name it, we do it.
Games Society:
The games society is often one of the most important societies of a college. In our college, it gives a chance to talented young women to showcase their talent and dedication to various sports. We have a classmate, who goes to basketball practice 3 days a week, and I have never seen a more dedicated person as her. Sports are healthy for the youth. Not only that, playing as a member of a team, increases group cohesiveness and the sense of being a part of something bigger than you are.
Debating Society:
In the modern world, it has become increasingly important to state one's opinion and ideas, especially for young women who asp[ire to be more than they are given credit for. We are not "just girls" today, we are growing up min a time, where the female is becoming stronger, wiser and more opinionated about her needs as well as others. Mahatma Gandhi had said“To call woman the weaker sex is a libel; it is man's injustice to woman. If by strength is meant brute strength, then, indeed, is woman less brute than man. If by strength is meant moral power, then woman is immeasurably man's superior. Has she not greater intuition, is she not more self-sacrificing, has she not greater powers of endurance, has she not greater courage? Without her, man could not be. If nonviolence is the law of our being, the future is with woman. Who can make a more effective appeal to the heart than woman?"
In this sense, the debating society in colleges present a forum for students to not just voice their opinions about modern situations and trends, but also to be aware of them.
These societies are like the family that one can choose by themselves. They may be secondary groups socially, but the members provide each other moral support, a sense of belonging somewhere, of being more than just an average individual and of being respected for one's talents and passions. Its really important to be a part of a group or society during the years a person spends at college. Its refreshing and add some flavour to life at college, with loads of study material and new assignments on a daily basis. Sp have fun and live your life, you only live once you know? ;)
